Dominican-American soprano Lidia Luciano landed in the world of new music following an unconventional trajectory. This non-linear career path influences not only her approach to new music (and all works), but also drives her artistic vision and desire to communicate with audiences.
She began her career in New York City, performing in a staged version of Schumann's Frauenliebe und -leben and singing with local opera companies in productions of Suor Angelica, The Magic Flute, La fille du régiment, and Cavalleria Rusticana. After moving to Berlin, she worked extensively with the Berlin State Opera (Staatsoper Unter den Linden), singing in productions of Aida, Moskau Tscherjomuschki, des Simplicius Simplicissmus Jugend, and Mario und der Zauberer.
Eventually, she found her way to new music, where she found her true niche. She’s worked with some of the leading composers in new music, including Sarah Nemtsov, Chaya Czernowin, Lisa Bielawa, Stefan Prins, Klaus Lang, Manos Tsangaris, and Du Yun. She’s performed and premiered works at festivals such as the Frequenz Festival for Experimental Music, Wittener Tage für neue Kammermusik, Münchener Biennale, and the Neuköllner Originaltöne. In 2023 she received an honorable mention for the Kranichsteiner Musikpreis at the Darmstadt Ferienkurse. Recent engagements include a debut at the Dresden Philharmonic, a recording session at Deutschlandfunk in Cologne for the portrait CD of Eloain Lovis Hübner, and continuing to experiment with improvisation and spatial performance with the ensemble die Internationale Volksmusik.
She received her Bachelor of Music from New York University in vocal performance (classical singing and opera) and her Master of Music from the Mozarteum University in Salzburg in new music vocal performance, having studied one year of the Master’s at the Dresden University of Music Carl Maria von Weber.
